MashLogic™ Privacy Policy

This privacy policy was last revised on January 27, 2009.

Thanks for dropping by. We'd like to explain how MashLogic works so that you can make an informed decision about installing our application.

MashLogic, Inc. ("MashLogic," "we," or "us") knows that you care how information about you is used and shared. This Privacy Policy explains what information of yours will be collected by MashLogic when you use MashLogic.com and related software and services (the 'Application'), how the information will be used, and how you can control the collection, correction and/or deletion of information. We will not use or share your information with anyone except as described in this Privacy Policy.

We believe in transparency. As a user you will have visibility into how we process web content and how that might impact you. Our objective is to ensure that you derive value from our application, and find our security policies reassuring. Our success depends on User Trust and we are motivated to cultivate and sustain this trust.

Information We Collect

User-Provided Information: If you correspond with us by email, we may retain the content of your email messages, your email address and our responses in order to process your inquiries, respond to your requests and improve our services. You may also configure your personal preferences and interests information in order to enable the Application to enhance your Internet browsing experience. These configuration preferences are stored in a private file within your web browser along with the preference data for any other add-ons that you have installed, and are not shared with MashLogic, except as described in the section below on How We Use Your Information.

Currently, the MashLogic Application runs as an add-on to your Web Browser. The Application contains a set of "mashes" that you can selectively activate. When you click on a mash in our configuration panel, the manner in which it handles data is shown in the Data Sent field of the Mash Profile. Mash Profiles are available here. Our mashes handle data in three distinct ways.

  1. A few mashes (e.g. Currency Converter) operate entirely on the client. No data is sent to our server.
  2. Many of our popular mashes process data from unsecured web pages (http) on our server. When you load such web pages with any of these mashes activated (e.g. Wikipedia), the page content is submitted securely (SSL encrypted) to our server. Our server returns a list of terms to the MashLogic Application, and links appear on the web page in your Web Browser. We cache the term list for a maximum of twenty-four (24) hours to improve our response time if you activate new mashes on a particular page. MashLogic does not collect, process or store the remaining content of the web page. Furthermore, MashLogic does not have any record of the URL of the page or any headers.
  3. If you load a secure web page (https) in your browser, no data is sent to our server. Secure pages are presumed to carry sensitive information, so MashLogic does not collect, process or store this information.

Cookies Information: When you visit MashLogic.com, we may send one or more cookies - a small text file containing a string of alphanumeric characters - to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser and lets MashLogic enhance your navigation through the site. A cookie does not collect personal information about you. MashLogic may use session cookies or persistent cookies. A persistent cookie remains on your hard drive after you close your browser. Persistent cookies may be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the site. Persistent cookies can be removed by following your web browser's directions. A session cookie is temporary and disappears after you close your browser. You can reset your web browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features of the Application may not function properly if the ability to accept cookies is disabled.

Install Identifier: When you install the MashLogic add-on, we write a text string that uniquely identifies your browser into the configuration file. This identifier behaves just like a persistent cookie. It does not collect personal information about you. The Install Identifier is sent to MashLogic on every request. We use this identifier to validate traffic from your browser to the MashLogic server.

Log File Information: Log file information is automatically reported by your browser each time you access a web page. When you register with or view our site, our servers automatically record certain information that your web browser sends whenever you visit any website. These server logs may include information such as your web request, Internet Protocol ("IP") address, browser type, referring / exit pages and URLs, number of clicks, domain names, landing pages, pages viewed, and other such information.

Clear Gifs Information: When you use the Application, we may employ clear gifs (a.k.a. Web Beacons) which are used to track the online usage patterns of our users anonymously. No personally identifiable information from your MashLogic account is collected using these clear gifs. In addition, we may also use clear gifs in HTML-based emails sent to our users to track which emails are opened by recipients. Furthermore, we may use clear gifs on the web pages of our partners who distribute customized versions of MashLogic. The information is used to enable more accurate reporting, improve the effectiveness of our marketing, and make MashLogic better for our users.

How We Use Your Information

We do not currently require user registration or collect personally identifiable information (e.g. name or e-mail address) from you to provide you with the features and functionality of the Application.

When you visit the MashLogic website and use our application, our servers automatically record information that your computer's web browser sends whenever you visit any website. These server logs may include information such as your web request, IP address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your web browser.

When you invoke a callout (pop-up) by clicking on a link added by MashLogic, we log the event. We aggregate this data to better understand use patterns and eventually improve the quality of information shown in the callout. If you click on a link inside a callout, we redirect the link through our server and log the click. When we redirect a link, we may insert an affiliate code into the URL so that we receive credit for the traffic and to log the click data for audit and fraud detection. This includes your IP address and the time of the click. If you store sensitive information in your MashLogic configuration, we will encrypt that data en route to our server and if submitted to an external site (e.g. your LinkedIn credentials).

MashLogic may use aggregate anonymous information about you (such as anonymous usage data, referring/exit pages and URLs, platform types, number of clicks, etc.) without identifying you as an individual to third parties. We do this for purposes such as analyzing how the Application is used, diagnosing service or technical problems, maintaining security, and personalizing advertisements and promotions. We may share with third parties certain pieces of aggregated, non-personal information, such as the number of MashLogic users who searched for a particular term. We do not store any data on our servers that associates web page content with individuals, web browsers, or IP addresses.

If you are using or visiting MashLogic from outside the United States, please note that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States where our server infrastructure is located. The data protection and other laws of the United States will vary from those in your country. Regardless, we seek to take reasonable steps to ensure that your privacy is protected. By using our Application, you are consenting to have certain non-personally identifiable information relating to your Internet usage and preferences transferred to and processed at our facilities in the United States.

We use cookies, clear gifs, and log file information to: (a) provide custom, personalized content and information; (b) monitor the effectiveness of our service; (c) monitor aggregate metrics such as total number of visitors and traffic; and (d) help you efficiently access your information after you sign in.

How We Share Your Information

Personally Identifiable Information: MashLogic will not collect, rent or sell your personally identifiable information to others. We do not currently require any personal information from our users. However, we may do so in the future, to improve the quality of our service (e.g. accessibility, personalization, protection). If we propose to use your personal information for any purposes other than those described in this Privacy Policy, we will offer you the ability to opt out of the use of your personal information for those other purposes.

Except as otherwise described in this Privacy Policy, MashLogic will not collect or share your personal information with any third party without your prior consent unless we have a good faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of such information is reasonably necessary to (a) conform to applicable law or regulations, comply with legal process and enforceable governmental requests served on us or our affiliates, or investigate, prevent, or take action regarding suspected or actual illegal activities; (b) to enforce our Terms of Use, including investigation of potential violations thereof, take precautions against liability, to investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations, to assist government enforcement agencies, or to protect the security or integrity of our site, including detection and prevention of fraud or other threats to our site; and (c) to exercise or protect the rights, property, or personal safety of MashLogic, our users, the public or others as required or permitted by law.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information: We may share non-personally identifiable information (such as anonymous usage data, referring/exit pages and URLs, platform types, number of clicks, etc.) with interested third parties to help them understand the usage patterns for certain MashLogic services.

MashLogic allows other companies, called third-party ad servers or ad networks, to serve advertisements through the Application. These third-party ad servers or ad networks use technology to send, directly to your browser, the advertisements and links that appear on the MashLogic Application. They automatically receive your IP address when this happens. They may also use other technologies (such as cookies, JavaScript, or Web Beacons) to measure the effectiveness of their advertisements and to personalize the advertising content. You should consult the respective privacy policies of these third-party ad servers or ad networks. The MashLogic privacy policy does not apply to, and we cannot control the activities of, such advertisers.

MashLogic uses third-party analytics services to measure usage and traffic for our Application. These analytics services automatically receive your IP address when this happens. They may also use other technologies (such as cookies, JavaScript, or Web Beacons) to carry out their operation and generate information on how MashLogic is being used. There is no exchange of any personally identifiable information between MashLogic and such services. You should consult the respective privacy policies of these third-party analytics services. The MashLogic privacy policy does not apply to, and we cannot control the activities of, such services.

MashLogic Platform for Third Party Mashes

In the near future, MashLogic will offer a platform that enables third-parties to develop mashes, leveraging our capabilities and framework. Third-party mashes will be subject to a certification process to ensure that they comply with the rules for data safety and privacy in this Privacy Policy. Every third-party mash will be required to publish a Mash Profile that documents its purpose and function. Every mash is described in detail in a Mash Profile to keep you informed.

How We Protect Your Information

MashLogic uses commercially reasonable physical, managerial, and technical safeguards to preserve the integrity and security of your personal information. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to MashLogic and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your transmission of information, MashLogic makes commercially reasonable efforts to ensure the security of our systems. However, please note that this is not a guarantee that such information may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards. You acknowledge that you provide any personal information at your own risk.

To protect your privacy and security, we take reasonable steps (such as requesting a unique password) to verify your identity before granting you access to your account. You are responsible for maintaining the secrecy of your unique password and account information at all times.

MashLogic takes appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of data that we process, collect and store. These security measures include internal reviews of our data collection, storage and processing practices, as well as physical security measures to guard against unauthorized access to our systems.

Your Choices About the Application

You can disable MashLogic at any time by selecting "Suspend MashLogic" from the drop-down menu. When disabled, our application remains dormant for the duration of that browser session or until you enable it with "Resume MashLogic". You can uninstall MashLogic just as you would any add-on. In Firefox and Flock, you can find us under Tools > Add-ons. In IE7, de-select View > Toolbars > MashLogic.

Compromise of Personal Information

In the event that personal information is compromised as a result of a breach of security, MashLogic will promptly notify those persons whose personal information has been compromised, in accordance with the notification procedures set forth in this Privacy Policy, or as otherwise required by applicable law.

Children's Privacy

Protecting the privacy of young children is especially important. For that reason, MashLogic does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 13 or knowingly allow such persons to register. If you are under 13, please do not send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address. No one under age 13 is allowed to provide any personal information to or on MashLogic. In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe that we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us at privacy@MashLogic.com.

Links to Other Web Sites

We are not responsible for the practices employed by Web sites linked to or from our Web site nor the information or content contained therein. Please remember that when you use a link to go from our Web site to another Web site, our Privacy Policy is no longer in effect. Your browsing and interaction on any other Web site, including those that have a link on our Web site, is subject to that Web site's own rules and policies. Please read over those rules and policies before proceeding.

Notification Procedures

It is our policy to provide notifications, whether such notifications are required by law or are for marketing or other business related purposes, to you via email notice, written or hard copy notice, or through conspicuous posting of such notice on our Website page, as determined by MashLogic in its sole discretion. We reserve the right to determine the form and means of providing notifications to you, provided that you may opt out of certain means of notification as described in this Privacy Policy.

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

If we change our privacy policies and procedures, we will post those changes on this page to keep you aware of what information we collect, how we use it and under what circumstances we may disclose it. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page. Each version of this Policy will be identified at the top of the page by its effective date, and we will archive prior versions of this Policy. If MashLogic becomes involved in a merger, acquisition, or any form of sale of some or all of our assets, we will provide notice before your personal information is transferred to the acquiring company and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
